Understanding Pressure Washer Nozzles: What They Do and Which One You Need
When it comes to pressure cleaning, the nozzle is one of the smallest — but most important — parts of the system.
Your pressure cleaner might be rated at 3,000, 4,000 or even 5,000 PSI, but how that pressure is delivered to the surface depends heavily on the nozzle. The correct nozzle can make cleaning faster and more effective, while the wrong one can reduce performance or potentially damage the machine.

Why does the nozzle matter?
A pressure washer nozzle controls how the water leaves the machine, including the spray pattern and concentration of the water jet.
As a general rule, the narrower the spray angle, the more concentrated the cleaning force. A wider spray angle spreads the water over a larger area, making it better suited to general cleaning and more delicate surfaces.
But choosing the correct spray pattern is only part of the equation. The nozzle orifice size is equally important.
Understanding nozzle orifice size
The orifice is the small opening inside the nozzle that controls how much water can pass through it. Choosing the correct orifice size isn’t simply a matter of matching the nozzle to the PSI rating of your pressure cleaner.
Flow and pressure dictate the correct nozzle orifice size.
Before selecting a nozzle, it’s important to know both the flow rate (LPM) and operating pressure (PSI) of your pressure cleaner. These two figures are used together to determine the correct nozzle size for the machine.
Getting the orifice size wrong can have a significant effect on performance:
Too large an orifice
If the orifice is too large, too much water is allowed through the nozzle. This reduces the resistance in the system and your pressure cleaner may not be able to reach its desired operating pressure.
For example, a machine designed to operate at 4,000 PSI may only achieve a significantly lower pressure if fitted with a nozzle that is too large for its flow rate.
Result: reduced pressure and cleaning performance.
Too small an orifice
If the orifice is too small, the nozzle restricts the flow excessively. This can cause the pump to operate outside its intended operating conditions and potentially result in excessive pressure and damage to the pressure washer.
Result: excessive pressure and potential damage to the machine.
This is why simply buying a nozzle based on the PSI rating alone isn’t always enough. You need to match the nozzle orifice to the actual flow and pressure of the machine.

Nozzle Kits – the versatile option
For pressure cleaners where you want a range of spray patterns available, a nozzle kit is a great option.

- 0° pinpoint – concentrated cleaning power
- 15° fan – powerful, focused cleaning
- 25° fan – a good general-purpose cleaning pattern
- 40° fan – wider coverage for lighter cleaning and rinsing
- Detergent nozzle – for applying cleaning chemicals

The 030 nozzle kit is generally used with 3,000 PSI units, while the 040 nozzle kit is generally used with 4,000 PSI units.
Having a complete kit means you can quickly change the spray pattern depending on what you’re cleaning, rather than trying to make one nozzle do everything
Vari-Jet – one nozzle that does it all
If you don’t want to carry or change a collection of different nozzles, the Fig 9 Vari-Jet Nozzle is the jack-of-all-trades option.
Designed for machines up to around 3,600 PSI, the Vari-Jet allows you to adjust the spray pattern simply by turning the nozzle. It can provide anything from a concentrated jet through to a wide spray pattern, making it particularly useful for operators who need to switch between different cleaning jobs quickly.

Turbo Nozzles – when you need serious cleaning power
Sometimes a standard fan nozzle simply isn’t enough.
That’s where a turbo nozzle comes in.
Our Fig 16-1 Contractor Turbo Nozzle is designed for heavy-duty cleaning applications. A turbo nozzle uses a concentrated jet of water that spins rapidly, creating a rotating cleaning pattern. This combines the impact of a narrow jet with greater coverage, making it extremely effective at removing stubborn contamination.
Turbo nozzles are ideal for applications such as:
- Heavy dirt and grime
- Concrete and hard surfaces
- Built-up mud
- Heavy machinery and equipment
- Stubborn industrial contamination
- Driveways and hard-standing areas
However, more cleaning power isn’t always better.
A turbo nozzle is designed for aggressive cleaning and is not suitable for delicate surfaces. Paintwork, soft materials, timber and other sensitive surfaces can potentially be damaged if subjected to an intense rotating jet. When using a turbo nozzle, start at a safe distance and work your way closer as required
